"I think he saw an "opportunity" and took it, and hadn't thought it through like he had perhaps others. Not that I believe he was a cunning and stealthily calculating person ever... just that, like Steve has illustrated in the other topic related to this case, he flew under the radar because he was just some dingy loser that no one really took much notice of and really, honestly, didn't want to. This is an advantage. To be odd and off-putting, but not to the point of walking around in public with his pants around his ankles, for example, and prompting people to immediately call LE or report the behavior. Just weird enough for people to want to stay away, not odd enough to spurn people to pick up the phone and report or take a good, hard look at.Generally, people do not ruminate much over these kinds of people while going about their daily lives. They think "Hell! That guy is creepy." and get the heck on their way. This is the advantage that these people have.Another thing that I've thought about is that this guy obviously has several screws loose. That kind of secluded lifestyle, homelessness and self- segregation will lead a person to further deteriorate over time...taking "opportunities" or "chances" that are not as well thought out as previously. This is where I believe Hilton was/is and what led to the more sloppy crime in this instance.I don't think the guy was ever a rocket scientist, by any stretch of the imagination."
This person seems to think that if we set up some sort of screening
system for the "odd and off-putting" people of the world, we'll some-
how have a safer world. Ever since Meredith Emerson's murder,
I've been following the story on various online news outlets and
forums, and while there have been some occasional interesting com-
ments and information, what I've mostly come across are the myriad
calls for vigilante justice, "hang 'em!", "cut off his head!", and the
like. And I certainly understand the outrage. I can empathize and
imagine Meredith was my sister and how I'd feel. But the difference
I feel between me and these forum rabblers (for lack of a better term)
is the understanding of the nature of venting and the real desire to
implement these wacky examples of lynch mob retribution. And
these are my fellow citizens, and they make up the majority. Scary
fucking shit.
